Rev. Dr. Demetrius B. Harris
Rev. Dr. Demetrius B. Harris is a native of Norfolk, VA, and the daughter of Walter and Ada Bright. She was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools and continued her education at Norfolk State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts degree in Pre-Elementary Education. She furthered her education at Longwood University, gaining educational certifications as a Reading Specialist and a Library Media Specialist.
She has taught in the Chesapeake Public Schools, Chesterfield County Public Schools, and Richmond Public Schools. She currently works for Literacy Lab as an Early Literacy Coach for the Leading Men Fellows in Richmond, VA.
Dr. Harris is a 2006 graduate of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, where she received the Master of Divinity degree with an emphasis in Christian Education. Demetrius Harris received the Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 2017. Her doctoral project was “Teaching Spiritual Themes to African American Children: A Picture Book Approach.”
Dr. Demetrius Harris was licensed to preach in April 2006 and ordained in March 2012. She is very active with the Women’s Ministry and the scholarship committee at Second Baptist Church. Each year she coordinates the annual Easter egg hunt for children in the church and community, along with the annual Give-Away at the Black Community Love Festival.
She was honored in 2013 with the Women of Distinction award by the Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Delta Chapter. Their motto is “Not For Ourselves…But For Others.”
She is the wife of Dr. James Henry Harris, Senior Pastor at Second Baptist Church, Idlewood Avenue. They are the parents of two sons, James Corey and Cameron Christopher.
